INTRODUCTION

The Occupational Health and Safety Committee organize a three-day seminar annually. This seminar reviews the latest advancements in fire fighter Health and Safety. Topics covered at previous seminars included: Critical Incident Stress, Vehicle Response Safety, Metabolic Heat, the effects of ‘Hepatitis B’, and understanding and applying the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

This seminar is jointly attended by Fire Chiefs from locals who authorize their participation. It is the OPFFA’s view that the Health and Safety of fire fighters is the responsibility of both union and management. Joint attendance has provided the opportunity to open the lines of communication with administration which has proven beneficial in other areas.

Manufacturers of fire fighter safety equipment are invited to attend for one day during the seminar. This allows for local OH&S members to view the latest in fire fighting equipment, technology, and safety products.

This forum has steadily increased with popularity and has proven successful with locals becoming better educated and vigilant in the areas of fire fighter health and safety.
