INTRODUCTION
The ‘key’ to our success has been to have fire fighters representing fire fighters. To accomplish this we must educate our members to effectively negotiate and administer their collective agreements. Accompanying the ‘core’ labour relations topics we have trained our members in media relations, brief writing, public speaking and basic computer/internet skills.
The OPFFA sponsors two Labour Educational Seminars every year, one in the spring and the other in the fall. These seminars are named after Dr. Eric Taylor who was the key-note speaker for OPFFA seminar for over three decades. Dr. Taylor is chiefly responsible for many of the successes professional fire fighters have enjoyed and his teachings still hold true today including his three fold test which guides us on all issues:
1. Is it morally sound,
2. Is it legally defensible, and
3. Is it reasonably practicable

Government Lobbying
Grievances
Workers’ Compensation
Arbitration
Safe Staffing
Media Relations
Treasurers and Budgeting
This forum has been extremely successful and popular. As a result of this education
locals have done very well in the area of collective bargaining and contract administration. Locals from other provinces are now attending and receiving the benefits of our seminars.
2010 LABOUR EDUCATION SEMINARS
The 2010 Dr. Eric G. Taylor Fall Labour Education Seminar will be held from October 4 to 7, 2010 at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel, in Niagara Falls.
