INTRODUCTION
This OPFFA Legislative Conference is organized by the Legislative committee and follows the format developed at the IAFF Federal Legislative Conference.
The conference serves as an opportunity for many of the members to experience the political process first hand.
We meet both formally and informally with the Premier, his Cabinet Ministers, the Opposition Critics and all other MPPs, the bureaucrats and policy makers and anyone else who would have an impact on the decision making process that affects our members and the communities that we protect.
This conference has given us opportunities to build relationships and lobby for legislative change. Our successes include presumptive legislation for fire fighters (Bill 221), OMERS pension reforms (Bill 206), increased protections from blood-borne diseases (Bill 28), amendments to the Safe Streets Act (Bill 58), protection for fire fighters’ personal insurance rates (Bill 40), marijuana grow labs protections for first responders (Bill 128), the 2005 Fire Services Grant, IAFF (Ontario specific) graphic license plates and more. Success has also been measured by the relationships that have developed between our locals and their MPPs. Despite ongoing lobbying by the representatives of the OPFFA, the annual conference is the only opportunity to collectively lobby as an Association.
