President LeBlanc and the OPFFA held a press conference at the site of the Ontario Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Toronto this morning to officially announce the $500,000 fundraising initiative that will result in the restoration of the memorial grounds and monument walls, which were damaged as a result of a cowardly act of vandalism on the evening of May 12, 2008.
In attendance for the official announcement, among others, were Tim Beckett, 1st Vice President of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs and Dave Thomson, President of the Fire Fighters' Association of Ontario.
Also in attendance, on behalf of Premier McGuinty and the Ontario Government, was the Hon. Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Minister Bartolucci kicked-off our Memorial Restoration Fundraiser with a generous contribution of $100,000 on behalf of the Ontario Government.
"We cannot allow the memory of these brave fire fighters to be dishonoured by cowardly and depraved vandals," Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Rick Bartolucci said. "Our contribution to restoring this memorial is a measure of our gratitude to those fire fighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community and to their colleagues who continue to risk their lives for us every day."
President LeBlanc and the OPFFA, along with the OAFC and FFAO, are calling on all fire fighters across Ontario as well as, fire service suppliers, other fire service stakeholders and the public to contribute to this fund in memory of our fallen and in recognition of the sacrifice they have made.
