BARRIE PFFA WINS MD's ONTARIO FIRE DEPARTMENT OF THE YEAR AWARD!

Muscular Dystrophy Canada is honored to have the friendship and support of Fire Fighters. This incredible partnership began in 1954, and Fire Fighters continue to be our largest and most significant group of stakeholders. To recognize the efforts and ongoing commitment of these heroic individuals, Muscular Dystrophy Canada has an annual awards program which recognizes the Fire Department of the Year.

Congratulations to Barrie Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 1753 for being named the Ontario Fire Department of the Year.
Since 1970, the Barrie Local has raised $790,945 for those affected with muscular dystrophy. This past year despite an "Economic Storm" Barrie PFFA was able to raise $54,136, an increase of $2,112 from the previous year and since 2003 has been able to increase their donations by 80%.

They continue to organize the largest Boot Drive in Canada and have tremendous support and participation from their members and community. Last year more than 100 members were holding "Boots" along with 5 retirees, 50 family members, friends and clients. Also participating was their local MP, other members of Council and the Georgian College Fire students who are learning early in their careers about this longstanding partnership. To better educate other departments about Boot Drives, Fire Fighter Charlie Gray has created a presentation we are now sharing with staff and departments.

Their nomination will now move forward and qualify for Muscular Dystrophy Canada National Fire Department of the Year. Again, congratulations to the Barrie Fire Fighters! The benevolent work you do in your community and for those affected with muscular dystrophy is truly inspiring.
